I have a conch shell I've had for years, would it be ok in a planted tank, or an aquarium in general? If ok, would it be fine to put java fern or anabius on?

I wouldn't do it. It would seriously raise your ph and hardness. They're usually large so your talking about a large effect. Very small snail shells can help add calcium in a subtle way for shrimp and snails but a conch shell might be overkill. It would work great in an African ciclid tank where the increased ph and hardness would be welcome and the fish would use it as a breeding place.

thanks for the reply. my pH is already high 8.4 - 8.7 so I wouldn't want to add to that.

*shock* O_O
Actually, in your tank it probably wouldn't make any difference at all. Not one bit. lol With your pH already that high I say add it, unless you plan on making other changes to lower your pH.
