Cleaning sand

I have a 30g tank with about 30lbs of sand. What is the best way to clean the sand without removing all my fish?

Use a gravel vac around 1inch above the sand

And if you have any other problems, throw some MTS (Malaysian trumpet snails) in there to sift through the sand

That's what I do now but I didn't know if it was good enough. I seem to have a lot of "cleaner" fish in there that do a great job. Just wasn't sure if its enough! Thanks for all of the advice!
