Planted tank question

This is going to sound like a really dumb question but if I clip off all the leaves on a stem plant, will the actual stem die?

Maybe, maybe not. I have had bar stems with roots make new leaves. I have also had new plants grow from just a leaf. Some stem plants will grow new plantlets from a bar stem. Why would you cut off all the leaves? Is there something wrong with them?
