chromis or clown

I'm new to salt water and my 20 gallon tank is well into its cycle. I would really like a pair of clowns for my first fish but at the price they are, would it be better to go with some chromis first. I'm not new to fish tanks. I have a 55 gallon thats been up and running for 5 years but just wondering if I should start out with a less expensive fish to see how it goes. My only other concern is if chromis do fine and I want to get some clown fish, would 4 fish in a 20 gallon be too much...

I would go with a pair of ocellaris clownfish

Would probably be over stocked depending on filtration reef, inverts etcI would go with clowns they are hardy fish so should be fine provided tank has been cycled etc
