Clown hosting fake anemone...but only at night?

Well for the past... I'm going to say 4 months, I have had one of those long tentacle fake anemone's in the 29gall, these http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...&N=2004+113541 (a white one). The clown has kinda just ignored, if not avoided the thing. I put it in several different areas and he just stayed away. Well after doing some reading about O. clowns, I found out that they don't naturally host long tentacles. So out of curiosity, and my thinking was, what could it hurt? I cut about an inch off the top of it and rearranged the rock-work so it would be right next to the clowns territory (which happens to be smack middle of the tank ) and for the past few day's I have noticed the clown "eyeing" it but not really doing much, until last night. I was up late doing to research for the new 75gall (to come, but never can do to much research lol) and I look at the clock and its 2:30 am anyways, not being able to sleep with all that new knowledge running through my head I went downstairs and sat next to the tank. and to my surprise to find my little o. clown wiggling away in the fake anemone! so I ran upstairs, go my camera and took a few shots. I will try and upload them later (I'm on moms computer, and camera dock is on mine). But this morning (now 7:30) and the lights are on and all fish are "doing their thing" he will not host it. but last night he would swim away from it, and come back. over and over and over. So whats up with him only hosting it at night with only the moonlight on? I'm just curious

Just finding a comfortable spot to sleep IMO. I've had clowns snuggle up next to PH, lr, and even near the heater (off) at night. Clowns during the day will attempt to "host" many different types of corals other than anemones but true "hosting" as in bringing food to the host is mostly done in the symbiotic relationship of anemones.

Still a photo would be cute either way

I think he needs counselling. First of all he'll do it at night when no one is watching. See, you were not supposed to find out about his little secret fetish. Now you're gonna publish pics! He would be so upset if he found out.

We won't tell, of course.

Pics! Pics!

Mine host frogspawn all day at times.

Before they found that love, it was a featherduster. So weird and so much fun them fishes are!

blazeyreef,

Is it possible for you to take some footage of it so I can see how real it looks in current? The website makes it sound as though it's pretty darn close to realistic but all of these things I've seen in AU are rather stiff and wouldn't wave around too much except for under strong current.

Maybe a photo too please?

Yeah with the lights on is fine, as I just want to see how these fake ones move in the water. The photos make it look pretty chatty, but we'll see.
