newbi needs help

Going to start sw tank 75 gal bow front
I heard you can use pool filter sand in place of ls is this a good idea or not?
Do I put base rock and sand first thing for cycling then add lr afterwards?
any help would be great thanks.

im not sure of the pool filter, but i would go with sand first, fill that tank 3/4 of the way with saltwater, then the base and live rock, and top off with saltwater to fill it the rest of the way. if cured rock, used a cocktail shrimp to start the cycle. if using uncured rock, that should start your cycle for you.

Please do not cycle with live animals.

I am not too sure about pool filter sand. I think the last time I looked it was silica based sand (which is like glass shards to your sand critters, but can be used). I wouldn't use it, myself. Read the package and if it is aragonite sand, that is the good stuff.

I would add them all at once. Base and LR is a great combo and will save on some costs. The base will become "live" with time.

Actually, you are in this area you might be able to find aragonite sand at a local Lowes or Home Depot. Here is a post that might help you:
