Opinions on Hermit crabs

Are they really worth all of the trouble (finding proper shells, ect.)? I have 4 torchus snails and 4 astrea snails. Will they kill them?

They can be, but all crabs are opportunists and snails make easy targets.

I was wondering more if a species of snail would do just as good as job. I'd prefer to avoid hermits if possible...

Nassarius and nerite are where I have the most success, due to one always being on the glass and the other under the sand, but the numbers always dwindle.
