Disapointing feedback for cj10488
Sold him $1400 worth of items including calcium reactor set up and EV240 skimmer. Paid me with false pay pal funds and now will not respond to my E-mails. Still owes me money from february. Beware.

Sorry to hear about you loss Darin. It is ashame that people try to take advantage of other people. If you can't afford something don't freaking buy it. It is that simple. Don't feel to bad you arent the only one he screwed with.

Wow, $1400 is not chump change.
This member still posts here too. Is it possible to call this person and try to work it out. I assume by your post you have shipped the items out? Can you use his shipping address to look up his number?

It sounds drastic, but how you explain it , what was done to you sounds like fraud? I would be contacting to police. Or are your just going to sum it up as a lesson learned (which I hope you don't!)

I find this truely sad, it is not something that is expected of a reefer. I have shipped items to fellow reefers before I received the money, simply cause they were a fellow hobbyest. I am on the breink of being burned for my first time, we'll see how that goes. Kinda sad, I remember when just the fact the person shared the hobby with you made them trustworthy.

Hi,
If he ripped you off that sucks - but I just wanted to share something with you.
Im living in Europe now and I sent $2000 to someone through paypal in December. It appeared to go through without a problem. And then the next day I get this email telling me my account is shut down temporarily until they can verify me.
Let me tell you - this is NOT easy to do from outside the US. They want you to call with the US phone number connected to your account.
Anyway. After about 2 WEEKS paypal finally sorted the problem and verified me. In the meantime, I almost lost the bass i had bought because paypal told the seller they were concerned I was a fraud. Nice paypal people.
Is there a chance this could have happened with this person? When it happens its usually due to high dollar amounts - of course, that doesnt explain why he wont email you...
Ijust wanted to say that maybe the funds didnt go through because of some fault of paypals originally...?
Good luck, I hope he contacts you.

Hey Darin
Why dont you atleast say the truth... I paid Via Paypal.. Paypal Jacked my Money... And told me to deal with it as I was falsely using my account because someone else owed them money that had a simular email address... And therefor stopped and reversed the transactions on my account.. WE had a payment plan worked out for repayment even though I was out 2100.00 due to paypal... I In good faith told you that even though the money was jacked from me would still repay it to you as you did not get the money... I have answered your emails And you have replied... I find It sad that you have to post personal business on a website when we have worked out repayment... I guess this is what I get for paying using paypal getting my money jacked by paypal and offering to payback the money that was takin from me so I end up paying twice for something.. Ohwell... Life goes on...

this is exactly what happened to me however they said they I was at a Loss... Even though I followed their steps as stated.. I was told time after time that It would be corrected that day.. I have since filled Fraud Charges with my bank to get my $$$ back but they said it could take up to 90 days...
Ohwell Life goes on and So I will I... I have offered to repay him Even though I have been out of work and Found out that My wife will be shortly too as she is going blind fairly fast... Money is hard around here and I have offered to do what I can even though I have already paid and Had my money taken... As Darin stated to me when this happened.. I was not the only one and He referred me to Paypalsucks.com
Ohwell I will just continue to Pay Darin a second time for the items and Live on.. If I was trying to Rip him off I would not Try to work with him and repay the money even though it was already taken from me..
James

I did post the truth. Paypal said you don't have the money to cover funds transfered! Its been since April 9th and you did not and have not paid me. It was not until i posted this here that you even sent an E-mail baxk since numerous attempts to contact you over the last week? I had to hunt you down on www.thereeftank.com an PM you because i have not seen you on this board?
We did work out a payment plan but you never followed through?? You gave me your word you were going to send me $20-$40 twice a month and never did. As of right now I have no money in hand and have not received any! All i got were exscuse.THAT my freind is what is sad.
If you would like to continue this feel free to E-mail or call me (just not toll free)

The sales mentioned were quite some time ago as I remember when cj10488 posted about buying them. At least a month on both, more I believe on the skimmer.

I believe we always were talking... I personally understand where Darin is coming from and Feel that he should as well understand where I am coming from... I have already had my money taken once... If I were a bad person I would have told him to take it up with Paypal as they are the ones that Took mine and his money... Again I am sorry for what happened but what Am I supposed to do on my end.. I have done everything on my part that I can.. I was going to send him a check for the funds But I knew he wanted the money quickly so he could setup a new tank So I Joined Paypal went thru the verification process and figured he would have the funds that day instead of waiting for a Money Order to clear... I have never once told Him that I wasnt going to pay... Darin Just because I spend a Gift certificate my father got me for my Birthday doesnt mean I was ripping you off... If I could go back and pay you via check and send it to your place intead of using paypal I would have... For those out there with paypal read www.paypalsucks.com you will find paypal has a clause for everything... Buyer/Seller protection If they decided to reverse funds there is nothing either party can do about it.. If the amount is over 500.00 there is nothing either party can do about it... I know Paypal was just on my local News around here for pulling the same kind of stuff they pulled with me... And I will probably be fighting til the day I die to get my money back from them.. There are sometimes people just cant answer emails.. Hell there is times that emails get lost or disappear... It doesnt mean the person is avoiding you or Ripping you off...
Sincerely,
James

Where is your money? Paypal, does not take money, they have no power to seize money. They can refuse to pay what you tell them to, but the funds are left where they were. It's that simple, if you could not use paypal, you could have pulled those funds back out of that new bank acct and paid him via check or money order.

Im not at all trying to antagonize anything here..just want to add something else.
The 2000 I sent through paypal (and I DID have the funds in my account) was frozen. It wasnt as though I could just get it back. It wasnt as though the guy I was sending it to could decline acceptance either. Paypal said it would be frozen until the account was restored.
At one point they said 'today'. And it actually was that day. They restored the transfer and sent it back to the guy I was buying from.
Then the very next day, poof - frozen again. Why? When I called they had NO answer. No one could explain it to me. It took quite a few more days to resolve.
By the time it resolved, I had already western unioned 2000 to the seller so he wouldnt give the bass to someone else.
I called paypal to tell them I no longer wanted to do the paypal transaction - as I had just paid the guy in cash. They said ok, they would put the order in, and when my account was unfrozen the money would not be sent out of my account.
However, when it was finally restored, it was automatically sent to the seller. I was very lucky he declined to accept it and sent it back to me, because paypal would never have reimbursed me. And it was all their fault to begin with.
So im just saying - i know for a fact that paypal has some screwey practices and is not at all 100% reliable. Most of the time it is, in my experience - but this time was a doozy.
Beware of paypal!! (i stil use it - but never for that much again)
But I would ask cj - how could paypal freeze your account because it was similar to someone else who owed them money? I dont get that part- lots of people have similar email addresses..
When do you plan to start paying him??

Just to clarify things a little: This post was originated as feedback from a transaction. This post was not originated as a proponent for or against PayPal. Several hundred million PayPal users could testify in either direction. It is my opinion that this is more about the content of character than excuses. When a deal is made limits are set. When a deal goes wrong action is taken to correct that. When two parties agree on terms be it the first or second time around people of character stand by their word. Did you make arrangements to pay it back? Did you follow through? If the answer is no to either question then chracter is in question.
I consider both Darin and James friends as fellow hobbiest. I have chatted at length with both over various matters of the hobby from buisiness to children. Just as reefrunner said, I too have send items prior to recieving payment from fellow hobbiest. More related to the subject at hand though, I talked with and made arrangements with James about building a custom sump for his system. I purchased the materials and made the sump before making payment arrangements. When it came time to ship the sump I was told he couldn't pay for it. I almost sent it out to him with "payment arrangemets" later. I was then told he would send me $50 for the first (barely covering half of materials cost) by the 10th of May. I have not recieved anything other than the occasional joke about me sending it out. I am now sitting on a custom acrylic sump I cannot use. Personally for me it isn't about money, it is about the time I invested. I can always make money, I will never be able to regain the time lost.
I am not angry. I am merely saddened that the strength of ones character is clearly defined by the value of their word.

I am sorry that the situation is what it is.
I'm not going to throw any stones here, frankly it's none of my buisness. What I can do is suggest that James send all the stuff back that is not alive(skimmer ect..) and then start paying for it as you get it, until paypal gets everything cleared up. Then James, you can pay it all off, and the stuff can be sent back to you.
My 2!
