Hello everyone. I am new to the whole fish tank community. I need to know how often that I have to change the filter in a small fresh water tank.

I've mostly heard not to change the filter media until it is falling apart since the beneficial bacteria lives in there. The company tells you to change it every month to sell more to unsuspecting aquarists.
