can anyone tell me what kind of fish this is?

That is a Pencilfish. It's sometimes referred to as a Hockeystick Pencilfish or a common pencilfish. It should be listed as a Nannostomus eques

Thank you. I was told it was a needle fish but it did not look like that to me.

Yes, definitely NOT a needlefish. lol These also have rather small mouths while needlefish have elongated mouths with teeth But you can see the resemblance here: Needlefish

I personally have a group of Nannostomus Eques. I like how they swim in at a 45 degree angle.
