Help restarting 29gal hex/aragonite substrate

Hi to everyone. I am in search of advice (re)-starting my 29gal hex/argonite substrate/fluval submersable filter/cichlid stones & rocks/one lonely pictus cat. My kenyi (aka charlie manson) ate everyone else (but the pictus) and grew to about 5in (beautiful bright yellow male) and had to be adopted out.
I had this tank about 15 years ago (everything is new except the tank) filled with assorted cichlids, great to watch their habits and the coexisted relatively peacfully. I didn't do so well choosing fish this time and would LOVE suggestions!

first, hex tanks aren't exactly the best to work with, because they have little surface area compared to volume, and not much oxygen exchange happens.
i would start with getting some live plants in there to help this.
are you dedicated to having a cichlid tank? or did you want to try something else?

I have a.long air stone in the tank and I have the air mix high on my filter. I am not dedicated to cichlids, I'm open to anything.

how long is the pictus?

my recommendation for this tank would be a simple community display.
a molly (any more than one and they'll breed on you), a beta, some random tetras, maybe some corydora catfish, possibly even a dwarf gourami depending on how much of the others you get.

stay away from danios for this tank, because they are very active top swimmers and need room to dart around. also go for bigger breeds of tetras if you choose to get some, because of your catfish.
