Hi im kit im 28 and i just bought my first aquarium, im planning to have a 100l 26gallon freshwater.community planted tank with some nano shrimps and small tetras, i also have a cat, that doesnt seem intrested at all in it all, but he has even figured out lasers and doesnt chase it anymore, so it might be beneath her, i started another thread in getting started but i think i messed up because little by little the whole thing unreveled and desappeared?!?, i think because i've put a video link in there? So yeah thats a good start ??

Hey now welcome aboard..

I have glofish tetras in my planted aquarium Awesome color.

If this is your 1st aquarium and even more importantly your 1st planted aquarium take your time, STUDY STUDY STUDY, ask lots and lots of questions.

Lots of great info on google and many of us can fill in any blanks you are left with

Hey there thank you so much, yeah i did read up a lot but theory is theory, then the pet shop has a 50% sale and you end up with neon tetras in an unfinished tank ?? im a mastermind at planning but sadly also at rushing and skipping parts of my own plans lol.... i did look into glofish but they dont sell them here so i have to make due with what nature provides.. which is still a lot ?

I now have 19 neon tetras (shop gave me more) and just 2 plants and some moss because my order got messed up, and the rest wont get here till next week ? its gonna get messy ?

After a water change and feeding theres two neons running after each other and fighting? Why would they do that?

Neons will spar with each other.
That's a lot of Neons in a 26g. And a lot of fish all at once for a new tank.

Please read the info on Fish In Cycling and make sure to test your water daily.

I have 21 Neons in my 55g and they look great in big groups.

Order your fish online they deliver them to your door. That's how I stocked all of my fish minus my feather fin catfish

Surprisingly successful way to find rarer fish.

now its more like us two are here, if u get close ill chase you away, and its always the same 2 staying togheter, if another neon comes in a 5cm range, he will be chased off :/

After all night and morning all the levels got quite high, probably from the shock of such a big bio load in a tank that was not mature, im testing up to 4 times during the day with strips and in the evenings with a liquid test, honestly I wanted to get 8 neons because there seem to be a consensus that at least 6-7 are needed to make them comfy, but I got carried away by the 50% and actually being able to afford them... and well... damage is done now lol as far as I can tell they are fine for now, I did a 40% waterchange and added some more bacteria I think I might overfed them after getting home yesterday so they will skip food tomorrow? Or should I just give them a tiny amount?

Neons are beautiful in a shoal, but personally I wouldn't add any more fish for a while, at least until your aquarium finishes cycling. Most people here will agree that the test strips are worthless, and to rely only upon a master liquid test kit. Keep a close eye on the neons, and read up about ich, and neon tetra disease...you see any neons with holes in the head, remove them IMMEDIATELY from the shoal. Hole in the head disease or neon tetra disease is HIGHLY communicable and will wipe out the rest of the group.

I would also expect some of the neons to die off, but I could be wrong. I've never kept them, and I'm not sure how hardy they are. I just know that I had a few deaths with my black neons and rummy nose tetras before my tank leveled out.... I like you, was impatient and inexperienced.

I would add a lot more plants, make sure you're over-filtering your tank (I run an Aquaclear 50 and 20 on my 38 gallon), and ask a lot of questions on here. Also, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH.

Knowing your fish, your plants and equipment, and understanding the cycling process will save you a lot of time, money, and heartache in the long run.

Keep up on the water changes, and remember to have fun! Good luck, sweetie. :3

Couldn't agree more!
I wouldn't bother even testing four times a day not a lot will change. I'd keep your testing to every three days if you feel compelled to keep testing. I my self am a vigourous tester and always test at least once a week but I work at a pet store (Once a week is even over kill) Speaking of which most aquarium/pet stores will do testing for free (in Australia anyway) so you would be best to save your money and let them do it for you.
Ammonia is the first one you need to watch for and go from there,

The water cycles probably the biggest drain on aquariums but while you're going through it you should buy more live plants they seem to thrive in the process!

The hobby is fun don't let the horrible things put you off

Yes! The rewards far outweigh the drawbacks of this particular hobby. But it's one that I've found that you can't skimp on research and advice with. Let yourself get infected with fish fever, and always keep learning and improving

I live in America, and while my local petco will test water when I ask, they will only use the strips. Personally I think petco is worse than useless when it comes to fish, reptiles and birds. It's all about profit for them, even at the cost of the animal's welfare.

If you can, finds privately owned local fish store and check it out in person. A good LFS will never pressure you into buying and will always give you good advice, even if it means steering you away from your first choice of fish or plant, and towards something more suitable for your tank.

My LFS always uses liquid test kits for my water, and cautions me against impulse buying. Even if it's a drive for me, I always prefer to head there and get good advice rather than wrong advice from people who just want to make a sale.

That's so sad to hear about your petco!
Personally I also have heard a lot of negative things about petco which makes me feel so lucky to work for a store who genuinely cares, speaking of which so many tanks cycling at work yesterday! We use the API Master Testing Kit, I don't know why people use the strips they aren't very good. It's like the people who only test for ph there's so much more to the tanks then ph it's a whole science in itself!

We do get a lot of people wanting to mix so many wrong fish together and even with pursauaion some still buy the fish and come to us when they die saying it was our fault it's defiantly a con of the job there.

My personal favourite aquarium where I live at the moment is Smiths Aquarium they specialise in chiclids but they have such an assortment of fish includeding stingrays! I can always count on their fish for quality, I would by from my work but we sell basic fish guppies, neons, and white cloud. They are some popular chiclids, ghost knives, rams and sharks but I really like unusual fish. I'd love to get my hands on a puffer one day ??

How's your tank looking today?

I'm glad you work in such a good place. Personally it would break my heart to work in my local petco. The betta fish are left for days in filthy water, there's always dead fish in the display tanks, and as they use a giant filtering system that cycles water through all the tanks, disease runs rampant in that store. It's sickening, and I refuse to buy livestock there.

Today my tanks are beautiful. I have two going right now, one a ten gallon betta tank with dwarf sag, Amazon sword, and water wisteria, and a 38 gallon community with red rummy nose tea, black neons, and a breeding pair of German blue Rams as king and queen... Not to mention the dozens of MTS. I tried eradicating them when I switched from sand to dirt, but some of them obviously survived and bred. I'm actually heading to my LFS Tuesday for some assassin snails, now that my mystery snail went to that big tank in the sky... Here's hoping the population will stable out soon.
