Hi everyone, Please help me!

My name is Sarah. I set up a 75 gallon tank about 3 wks ago. She's been cycling for about 1 1/2 wk's. I got the marineland c-360 canister filter. My brother in- law says to not do water changes @ cycling. I'm alittle confused on what I read online about this. I need alittle advice from someone. I did a 50% water change yesterday. I got tap water (well) so my levels and filter will be right. Just wondering about a few things if anyone has the time. Thanks!
