Good morning all,

I’ve had my setup for over a year now....what a learning curve it’s been! I’ve dealt with diseases, algae, births and still managed to really enjoy my tank and hobby! The forum has been a great source of advice and tips but I’m now going to change my setup and need some advice . I currently have a 120ltr tank with internal filter (came with the tank), gravel bottom and artificial plants. Having seen some great aqua scaping videos I’m now going to change to an Amazonian tank with tree roots etc. My first question is how would you deal with the fish when changing the substrate (going to use sand)? Secondly, I’ve bought a new, external filter but how do I ensure the filter is safe? I can transfer the filter media but will that be enough? Finally, would you remove the gravel and pour the sand in to the aquarium with water still in it?

Any help really appreciated!

Ive replaced substrate with water and fish in the tank. You can syphon out gravel.

You can pour in sand using a bottle.

I wouldnt recommend doing it all in one go. Do 1/4. A few days or a week later do another 1/4 etc. This will minimise any loss of beneficial bacteria established on your substrate.

With regards to changing over the filter, moving over the filter media will be a big help. After that you need to periodically check your water parameters and do water changes if needed until your cycle re-establishes. The other option would be to set up your new filter and run it alongside your old one for a few weeks prior to taking out the old one. Again check your water parameters periodically after removing the old filter.
