New member needs advice

Hi Everyone:

I just joined this site and it looks amazing. I have always had freshwater fish and Discus (My aunt and uncle owned a pet shop from 1945 - 1990). I want to start with a salt water fish only. Can I use a fluval 306 with a skimmer? (55 gallon). What should I use in the canister?
