Question New Salt Water Aquarist

Hi,
I'm Teresa. I am going to try a small salt water tank. It's about 30 gallons. This is really new for me being I usually go fresh water. I wanted to know if an under gravel filter is necessary? I have books that I could reference as well, but experience is my best advice right now. Should I start with distilled water too? I live in San Diego and I don't know the exact degreee of water hardness but could find out. I'm sooo green, but plan on getting hardy fish, perhaps a fancy angel. I am only going to get 2 medium sized fish. I have an octagon tank and I am aware of the room in there.

Thanks for ANY advice.

Teresa
