Noob here

Noob here always wanted a tropical tank so I got one for my son on his birthday. Like so many I trusted the big box stores and started my tank. Long story short I killed fish, purchased some feeders to do a fish in cycle. I check the water a few times a day and have been monitoring my cycle. It seems to have stalled out. Here is my tank

High ammonia, fish in cycle.

I am doing a fish in cycle with three feeder fish (small) and one small plant.

I am on day 17 and have not seen nitrites appear yet. I test water daily and sometimes twice a day. 10 gal 78 degrees Ph7.6 ammo .25-.40 o nitrate o nitrite. I have done 50 % water changes for two days and ammo drops to .25 then climbs up to .40. I de chlorinate and check for free chlorine with oto.

Thank you for the article, essentially it sounds like I have two too many fish to start the tank. Maybe it would be good to cull one out to my buddies turtle? If this would help with the ammonia levels I would consider it.
