180 gallon filtration help

Hello All,

I have a 180 gallon tank with two overflows and an eheim 2260 canister filter. The previous owner stated he created a closed loop system with the canister filter. I just removed the bulkheads, as they were sawed off and need help putting everything back together. How does a closed loop system work? Are overflows a good way to filter an aquarium? I am used to the classic inlet pipe that sucks out debris but with an overflow box, bottom debris is stuck at the bottom? Or does circulation from the closed loop system move the debris around? Additionally, has anyone hooked up pipes to a canister filter?
