So I am thinking about getting a 40 gallon aquarium but the Stand I have measures at about 32 length and the tank is 36 inches in length. Would the tank be ok sitting over the stand on each side about 2 inches?

glass or acrylic?
glass with sturdy frame, probably
acrylic, it probably voids any warranty and not recomended

the best solution is to cut a piece of 1/2" plywood the exact same dimensions as the tank and attach it to the stand. (y)

Then you definitely want to support the entire bottom. Theoretically it should be ok, but acrylic does flex and that would be strain on the seams, plus any tanks I have seen specifically state that not providing complete bottom support voids any warranty.
piece of 1/2" plywood would remedy it without being too obtrusive.
