I've been following the development of activated biochar (virgin wood) and based on the porosity and purity it seems like a good fit for aquarium & aquaculture systems using activated carbon. Also the density is low which makes it very economical.
If properly activated meso- and macropores are created which is ideal for large MW organics. Bituminous carbons have some mesoporosity but mostly micropores so they would become spent more quickly. Coconut shell is all microporosity which makes it ideal for gas/air applications but poor for water treatment. Who or what companies have the facilities to evaluate new activated products?
