What make and model air pumps are you talking about? If you have Rena air pumps you can buy 6-packs of replacement air filters from That Fish Place at http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/199488/product.web. They are made of felt and sized to fit specifically in the Rena air pumps.

I have a Rena, a Marineland and a Whisper. Part of research on which one is quietest. It looks like the Marineland pumps have been discontinued.
