Aquarium covers?

My 90g has 4 hinged, glass covers that lay over the tank and the light sits on top of that. I had to remove the rear panels to accomodate the skimmer and I'm wondering I really need the remaining panels. I have no eels in the tank and I guess if snails want out that bad so be it.
I live in MN so I suspect I'll lose alot to evapoartion in the winter...any thoughts?
Go with higher wattage heater to maintain heat?

tag along, I don't like my covers and gonna saving money just to get a better light. want to know if I need to cover the aquarium for now.
