I seem to be getting cat hair in my tank and it's getting caught in the input strainer. Would it be alright if I took it off? None of my fish are small enough to fit in it and it seems to be a softer pull of water and it can then pick up larger waste particles

Clean the strainer weekly to avoid this problem. Change the water weekly and remove other hair in your filter weekly.

But would it be bad if I just took it off?

I would leave it on because you could end up clogging the motor with hair. Do as the other post suggested and just keep cleaning it weekly. A turkey baster is a great tool for aquariums and will be ideal in this situation....
