Cheap mechanical and biological filter material

I have been out of the hobby for 5 years or so. I just purchased some new fish and a new filter to replace a broken one. Its the Aqueon quietflow 75. What are some cheap options for filter media to replace the manufacturer-supplied ones?

Pot scrubbers makes great biomedia. For mechanical media just buy sheets of sponge and cut to fit.

sponge from a different brand of filter. I like AquaClear HOB style filter sponges. Use a pr of scissors to cut them to fit.
