Check Valve

Do anyone have experience with check valves? Im not talking about the little ones that are attached to airline tubing. Im talking about as far as being attached to the return from the sump. How reliable are they?

Not good enough to prevent floods according to what I've read ... so I did not use one.
80 gal FW with 30 gal DIY wet/dry/sump.
9 fancy golds, 1 hillstream loaches, 1 rubber-lip pleco (C. thomasi), 3 SAEs, small school of white cloud minnows, planted.
