coralife 125
on the coralife skimmer when I need to empty the collection cup do I need to shut the system off or just lower the water below the cup

You dont need to shut it off. Just dump the cup and replace.

As melosu said, you don't need to unplug the pump, but make sure you turn the red knob down so the water level is below the neck.
