Counter current skimmers

Are they completely worthless?? I'm looking for a protein skimmer to go on a 29 gal reef and don't want to spend lots of $$ on one.

I have a cheap seaclone 100 on my 36 gal. This week it has skimmed half a cup of crap out of my water. It is all liquid skim so it could be doing a better job at skimming...but either way, before I had it up and running my water looked pristine. You just can't see all the garbage that is in your water.

If weekly water changes are done and you dont overfeed or overstock you should be fine without a skimmer. I dont run one on my biocube and its been fine. The small cheap ones seem to be just that, cheap.
