The only difference is a DE bulb must be used with a reflector that has a UV shield and a SE bulb is already enclosed in a UV shield. Also, depending on the specific bulb, they may need a different type ballast.

... and most DE hoods/reflectors come with the UV glass shield. Take your pick.

Ok...that narrows it down nicely. Does one put out more heat than the other?

Well, a 150w DE will put out 25w less worth of heat than a 175w SE (they don't make 150w SE and I'm not sure they make a 175w DE), but a 250w DE will put out the exact same amout of heat as a 250w SE and the same with 400w DE and SE.

Make sure you get a quality bulb. The cheap chinese made ones really are not very good. I tried and Larry convinced me to change. I swithed to Ushio 10k 150w de bulbs and have noticed a huge improvement in coral growth.
