In the box of the Ecosystem refugium says that you don't need a protein skimmer if you install the refugium, How true is this?

I dont know but I`m keeping both. Skimmers serve a useful purpose in getting rid of DOC`s. Alot of times companies will make these claims to make a sale IMO.

Moved to hardware/equipment forum:

A refugium is great for nutrient exportation assuming you keep it lighted and grow and trim macro algae regularly and will help keep no3/po4 low but does nothing to remove the waste that eventually converts to no3/po4.

Skimmers remove DOC before it has a chance to convert to no3/po4 within the tank and nothing can really replace it.

The recommendation is to use a skimmer part of the time if you house SPS in your tank as they are more demanding of water quality. Soft corals, zoos, shrooms, ect... like slightly "dirty" water.

More info on the subject can be obtained at the following site:

Let me know how it goes.
