Filter recommendations

I have a Fluval U4 internal filter that I want to replace. It makes a huge mess when I take it out for cleaning, plus it takes up a lot of space and doesn't look that great. Can someone recommend a quiet reliable filter that's under $100. Thanks

What is the size of the tank and what is currently in it?

It's a 55 gallon planted tank that will be housing 10 or more cardinals, Rams and 2 SAE. Tank is going through a mini cycle so I can't add any fish yet.
