Yesterday I purchased a Fluval FX5 (which will be an upgrade from my Aquatop CF500uv). I will be transfering most of my old filter media to the new filter (Bio rings and Mechanical mesh/pads).

My question is regarding the Mechanical Media. Since there doesn't appear to be any room around the outer circle of the FX5 to add my media (pads)should I place it in the center? I was thinking of cutting it up and placing in the top tray with my prefilter media. Or, should I leave it in tact and place it on top or bottom of my media (first or second tray)?

Media I plan on running in the FX5:
Top Tray (fluval pre filter media or bioballs and old filter pads)
Middle Tray - ceramic rings & old filter pads (cut or solid)
Bottom Tray - ceramic rings

"Will not be using carbon or Polishing Pads"

Your Thoughts

When I upgraded to he fx5 I seeded it with my media where my pre filter media goes. I believe the top tray. It was a sponge so I just cut it into pieces and placed it on top.

Hope this helps.
