Good pump for sand?

I have been running a HOB in my 29g which has sand and plants. While it's getting the job done and is simple to service, I am seeing a lot of wear on the impellar shaft where sand is getting in under the impellar. I am not quite wanting a canister as it looks like it would be a pain to clean (which I do VERY often), and the possibility of hoses coming loose. What filter would be best for sand?

You could just put a filter sock or prefilter sponge over intake to keep sand out..
