Right I've had to change loads of heaters because they stop working but my water is cold and my heater is set for 26 degrees but it only turns on when I switch it right up :S

what brands you been buying? Eheim Jager are pretty good heaters. I have one eheim jager, and one aqueon, in my 50 gal.

The best way to solve this problem and IMO, is a necessary piece of equipment is to have a controller. You can set the heater on a few degrees higher than your ideal temp, for example set the heater to 81 and set your controller to turn the heater on at 78 and off at 78.5
It works great and prevents your heater from killing your tank when it gets stuck in the "on" position.
I also use the Jager.... but the controller is the real deal.
