Hob filter and tank question

I I got my hob filters in today but they won't go over the side of the tanks.. It looks like I'm going to have ti cut the black trim a Lil. It's the lip that runs the inside of the tank. Will that be ok?

Hello Gilley...

I wouldn't make any change to the tank. It could affect it's stability. Maybe you need to go with a larger or different filter. Have you tried Hagen AquaClear?

I was thinking that but then again you do see people take the trim off the tank and have rimless tanks.
 
It it would just be the inside lip not what hold the tank together so to say
