Intake filter

I have a aquaclear70 hob filter and I am going to use sand for my bottom,should I use one of those foam covers on my intake tube to help keep the sand out of my pump?

If your using PFS then no ... Filter intakes are generally not powerful enough to suck up sand on the substrate. I really can't speak about play-sand.
