lighting?

To ensure the tank gets a consistent amount of light I was thinking of putting it on a timer? Does anyone else do this and is it necessary?

I can't speak to planted or marine tanks but in non-planted tanks it is not needed.

That being said, I like to do it anyway for convenience purposes.

I do for my planted tank. In a low light tank, as long as your fish get 10 hours of pure dark for sleep and algae is not an issue than whatever floats your boat!

I like timers for my tanks. I have plants so my lights are only on for 6-8 hours. Longer photoperiods tend to just grow Algae with or without plants IME.
