Will an ordinary metal halide 400W bulb that you buy at your local electrical supplier work with saltwater aquariums? or do you require special MH bulbs? If so what do you recommend?

No. Those bulbs, which are used for warehouse lighting, etc are the wrong color spectrum They generally run in the 4K range. You need something between 10K and 20K.
Personally, I like either Hamilton 14K or XM 15K.
