Magnum 250 filter Q: diatomaceous earth vs micron filter

Just ordered a new Marineland H.O.T. Magnum 250 off of eBay to use for water polishing.

I plan to use it to clean up a modest algae bloom--i.e., I already have a regular HOB filter, and the 250 is going into place only when needed to do some cleanup, not as a primary filter.

I have the micron filter; would using diatomaceous earth instead really make a difference in getting the water sparkling?

It's a 23 gallon tank, so I don't think the filter would struggle with DE.

thanks
