I have a Fluval 300 canister filter in a 54 gallon freshwater tank. (No fish yet, just live plants.)

One of the 'advantages' the filter claimed was that I could add my own media to the little baskets. But how do I know what sort to use??

Right now I just have what came with the filter. Is that good enough, or should I be looking for other options?

Depends on what you want. Some people like filter floss in the last one to polish the water but it clogs quick so you have to change it often.

The nice thing about a canister with baskets is that you have a lot of options. Using what came with it for starters is fine, then you can mix things up as you gain experience with it. Quite common is sponge/biomedia/biomedia (assuming three baskets) and sponge/chemical/biomedia.
