Right now I only have the ceramic rings in there because I'm medicating the tank but I see people put in pillow stuffing, polishing pads or floss (I don't know what that is) - does that go where charcoal should be put? If i put that stuff in will it take out the meds like charcoal would? Do those things act as a secondary mechanical filter?

Yes, they mechanically filter out fine particles. If you have a problem with fine particles in the water, then I would suggest looking into that. I don't use the stuff - all I have in mine are the sponges and biomax. If I had a problem with fine particles I would
