metal halide arangement

i want to put metal halides on my 55 gal. is it possible for me to get a 400 watt mh and place it in the middle of the canopy and have 2 48inch vho acintics. i was wondering if the brace in the middle of most 55 gallons will interfere with the light. and will one 400watt mh cover a 48 inch tank without having a shading issues on the sides of the tank. thanks

400 is overkill and a waste of electricity for a 55. The tank isn't that deep to justify a 400. You can get by with a 175 or 250, but you need 2. One in the middle will leave the sides noticably darker.
