metal halide question

I am currently bidding on a 400 watt blueline electronic ballast with a mogul based halide pendant with a 400 watt 20,000k xm bulb. I am just wondering if this is a good setup. Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Depends, what are the demensions of the tank.

it is 36 long 15 deep and 18 high

In a sense it's a bit more than necessary and in another sense, it's less. MH only has a useful range of 2ft X 2ft, so your tank is about 1ft to long. I personally would go with 2 X 250W mogul and put the mogul bases butted up abainst each other directly in the middle. You can get by with 1 400W just realize you'll be limited on the ends and the center will be VERY bright.

If I was to line the inside of my hood with a mirror or some kind of reflective material would that help?

Possibly a little, but good reflectors are an integral part of MH lighting anyway
