New but old RO unit!

I found a 5 stage RO unit at a second hand store that was brand new for $20. I have heard that the ro membrane has a shelf life. If so should I replace it now to be safe? Also can I put a higher output membrane in or do I have to use the same output? It is a model #RO-TFM-5SV with a 15 GPD membrane.http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o154/throwedtoad/S7304265.jpg

Good find! Yes, you can put a bigger ro membrane in there. That looks like that's a standard size housing. If the old membrane was never used, it should be OK. Try it. I would get a TDS meter too. I would also add a few other cartridges. If your going to be using the storage tank for drinking, it's nice to have a little inline carbon filter before the water goes into the tank. I would also add a DI cart for your tank water.
