Overkill or Not?

I'm running two medium sponge filters in my newly established planted 29 gallon tank sans fish. Is this redundancy or acceptable? Thank you

Steve

What is your goal for stock in this tank?

Are the Sponge filters cycled already? If not you would need to maintain ammonia for BB to colonize. More info on the nitrification cycle in the thread link in my signature getting started below.

One thing sponge filters do not do is suck up larger muck from the tank and you would need to vac the substrate. So it really depends what goals you have for the environment.

You can certainly run two sponge filters together, it can be good as in case one fails the other is still there functioning, so yeah. Might be redundant, but not necessarily a bad thing.
