plant weights as food weights?

Hello, I've got some worm cube food that I would like to have at the bottom of my tank but they float on the top. Someone suggested using plant weights to get them to sink but all I can find are lead strips. Would they be okay to use and would they be safe for my fish if they tried eating them? Thanks!
