plumbing, built in overflow return pipe & wave controler

Hi, I have a two part question. the first is i have a built in overflow i was wondering how tall should i make my return pipe 90 gal standard. the second part of that since i am running a wave controler how much room should i leave for the waves to not splash over the side of the tank.
