Protien Skimmer of death

I have a HOB reef octopus skimmer, im thinking of changing its name to the skimmer of death. So far It has murdered my 6 line wrasse, 2 peppermint shrimp and my yellow watchman goby. It always happens the same way, the skimmer starts making these crazy noises and when I take it apart the remains of its victim are in the pump. I can only assume they are jumping over the teeth that surround the intake.

Is there anything I put over the top to stop any future suicide attempts?

Getting it into a sump would take all issues away. If you have had that much problems it might be the only way to go.

Have you considered putting a screen over it to prevent the fish from getting in? Something with 1/4" mesh should work as long as food particles dont clog it up.
