Rear sump design help and suggestions

Hi All,

I have begun a Fluval M60 build. i plan on getting corals and a couple of S/W fish (no where near that point yet)

Now when it comes to filtration i want to get this right first time.

The design i have come up with is below, i would be extremely grateful for any suggestions anyone could provide.

I require to know;

1. Would this design work (without the external filter)
2. What is the best media types to put on shelves one and two?
3. how could i implement the external filter?

Sorry I meant middle and bottom shelves, not shelves one and two.
