Reef octopus

My skimmer is located in my sump , the other day I put in a piece of coral with some putty. Since then my skimmer has been overflowing . Should I just let it keep overflowing till it stops? Or is there something I can do??

Water changes should help and add some carbon if you can. Good luck!
