Will a ro unit work. Or does it have to be ro/di. Btw it for a saltwater tank

RO will remove phosphate, and silicate, from what I hear those are two problems with saltwater tanks. RO/DI will give you almost pure water, may be better for Marine application.

Sure it will work, but you want the purest water possible. The DI stage in the RO/DI helps to remove the impurities that the RO membrane doesnt. The additional cost is not very significant, and if you are going through the trouble of using RO you might as well add the extra stage.
